Streaming Basics #5 – High Level Gamer Maldiva
I really enjoyed my interview with Maldiva (which you can listen to on YouTube), but I also want to give you my version of the story. This will give you an idea of what I mean when I say “High Level Gamer” when it comes to streaming. I will also try my best to give other examples.
My Version of the Story, for you!
Maldiva’s game is World Of Warcraft. He’s played it for years and he LOVES playing Warlock. As a matter of fact, he’s amazing at playing Warlock as well. His preference is PvP. Thankfully for him, there are people who love watching PvP and he knew it. So he was able to utilize this high level game play that he had to his advantage. Instead of just trying to put himself first, he connected with his viewers by teaching them and showing them what it was like to slay the competition. Maldiva was even able to stream with no camera and still connect with his audience. He was giving them what he was good at, what he loved, and also what they wanted to see.
Other examples of high level gaming…
It’s completely understandable if you’re not an amazing Warlock in World of Warcraft. There are other ways to portray yourself as a high level gamer on stream. Some other examples of well known streamers doing this would be Gosu the League of Legends ADC who everyone wants to watch, and even Trump in Hearthstone. They are amazing at what they do and that is why people watch. Obviously there are a ton of other examples I could give you, but if this is the route you are going to take, you need to know what game you’ll be able to play.
Some things to think about:
- Are you going to commentate your every move to your viewers?
- Are you going to hold a period of time between each match or game for questions?
- How are you going to connect with your viewer?
- Are you going to answer questions and explain during the game?
- Are you still going to add music and other things that make the stream fun or is it solely going to be dedicated to learning.
Some things you should be doing:
- Letting people know you’re commentating or teaching in your stream headline
- Also letting people know on forums, Reddit and social media what kind of stream you hold
- Including WHAT you are good at so you grab the right audience.
Side Note
It’s okay to mix this in and also entertain, but then you have to know and be comfortable with entertaining. That doesn’t mean every so often telling a joke, that’s just normal. Entertaining is a whole different aspect of broadcasting. Now, I am not saying that high level gaming isn’t entertaining, and that’s exactly why we’re going to talk about what I mean in the next tutorial.
