ESports is taking over and everyone wants in. Being a pro gamer is becoming as yearned for as being a professional sports player. The only problem is that means there is soon to be just as much competition as there is for sports players. I am here to list the things you will need to do to become a pro gamer. Unfortunately, even with these things there is a chance you may not make it to the top. But lets say you really want this and you can’t see yourself doing anything else, these are the things you will need to know to become a pro gamer.
Talent
When I say talent, I mean, you need to be born with it. In order to be a pro gamer you need to be a prodigy. People like Derek Jeter and Tiger Woods are prodigies in their given sports. They understand it, it just clicks. This needs to be you with your given game. Fortunately you will be able to tell if the game is right for you or not do to the success, and the level you are at amongst the rest of the community. I have a roommate who has played League of Legends for over a year and just not progress. He just doesn’t see things the same way as a prodigy would. Maybe it’s over-analyzing or under, but whatever it is, you have to have it.
Don’t Lose Your Priorities
I know you don’t want to hear this, but you can’t quit school and/or work and expect to jump into this head first like it’s your main source of income and your golden gate career. It just does not happen like that. Although if it did I think there would be a lot of happy gamers out there! Stick to the rest of the plan, but while getting your diploma, degree, and paycheck. A lot of the gamers you see out there also are going to school or already have a degree.
Willingness to Practice
Yes, I know if you want to be a pro gamer that means you love playing video games, but “practice” is different. A pro gamer needs to be diverse, and casually jumping on to queue up for a ranked match and practicing new things to become a better player are two different things entirely. You have to become diverse and understand the game in many ways you may not see it right now. You will also have to be ready for team practices if it is a team game you are trying to go pro in, and these may be very different then what you are used to. Do not let this affect your mindset and determination to get better.
Determination
This will not happen overnight unfortunately. Tomorrow morning you are not going to wake up in the TSM house and go down to practice with Regi and the team. *slap slap* Wake up and smell the coffee. You need to keep your head in the game and be ready to be in for the long haul. It may turn into a waiting game, and eventually if you are good, you still may not be a starter at first. Hang in there and stay determined to get to the top; if you’re good enough and meant to be there, you will be.
Community
Let’s not sit here and think that you can play and be really good and expect to just get a call one day that you’re on a team. This is not how it works. In order to be on a team, you need to be one with the community of that game. Once you’re at a high level of gaming the players begin to know each other and communicate on a level that is more than just game chat; this is where you will need to be.
Consistency
Unless you’re starting your own team and expecting to rise to the top that way, teams are going to be looking for you to be consistent with what you do. Then again, if you are creating a team to rise to the top, you ALL will have to be consistent to get there. You can’t have a few fantastic games and then expect to be carried to victory every once in a while. Until you’ve proven yourself you need to make sure you’re always on! Climb the ranks, find a team, prove yourself, and then maybe you will be allowed to have an off day!

Technique
Things change and new players are constantly rolling into the scene, whether the current players like it or not. Sometimes it is good for you to bring new techniques and play style to the table to catch the competition off guard. This is one great thing about gaming, you can change it up and find great success, just be sure not to take to over the top of a risk while doing it. If you go a different route and stay by the books, make sure the techniques your following that way are up to par with your competition because if they are not, you will be walked over. You have to remember, when you get to a certain level you will be against competition that knows techniques and the ins and outs of the game as well as you will have to in order to be there!
Summary
Being a pro gamer is not an easy task and it takes a lot of training, practice, motivation, understanding of the game, and probably some luck here and there! If you are going to go for this, make sure this is what you’re really want before you try it. Once you know this is what you want though, don’t drop everything else in your life for it, and at the same time, if it does not happen right away; make sure your ready to still stick with it. Become one with your games community, rise to the top, and dominate the game. Thanks for reading and by now I hope you know how to become a pro gamer of your given game. Good luck!
