So what is the highest paying gaming tournament to date? Better question, why were you not a part of it? Well those are both good questions but I only have the answer to one of them. The highest paid gaming tournament was held for Dota 2, with 1.42 million dollars on the line. The lucky winners were a Swedish team called Alliance making them take home the winnings of the highest paying single event prize in eSports history.
The prize money won at The International reached a total value of $2.9m with the developers putting up $1.6m and $1.3m raised by the sale of interactive pamphlets to fans. That’s one way to get rich quick! We usually talk about a much smaller portions of income, slowly being generated like a normal job, but tournaments are definitely another huge way for gamers to make their money.
Here’s a picture of Jonathon Berg of team Alliance holding his trophy after the tournament. He is definitely one happy camper:
This tournament may be the “Highest Paying Gaming Tournament to date”, but this just proves there is much more to come. Being a gamer is a career, and it is possible.
