Streaming Basics #6 – Entertainer Brittany
This interview was awesome! Brittany was so open to sharing her story which means I absolutely suggest listening. I will try my best to portray everything she told me and give you my version of it below! Brittany is now well over 40 thousand followers and counting. You will learn a lot from the techniques she uses.
My Version of the Story, for you!
Brittany found out what streaming was and immediately loved it. She only had a mac at the time, but that wasn’t going to stop her. She was persistent and continued to stream even through nights when NO ONE was coming into her stream. She had some experience with raids coming into her stream from big name streamers and suddenly was off to the races. She even built a badass gaming PC to support her streaming habits. Talk about dedication. Brittany was building her following by connecting with them. Sure, she wasn’t horrible at the games she was streaming, but she also wasn’t and still isn’t a TOP gamer. No offence at all Brittany. She instead was able to slowly build a community of viewers around her. The same thing could happen for a High Level Gamer, but Brittany didn’t even need to be. She was able to play on-stream games with her viewers and even have other things going on to entertain them. If the viewers that came in weren’t looking for that type of streamer when they came, they were even converted or they would leave. And that’s completely fine!
Other examples of Entertaining Streamers
Being an Entertainer takes a certain type of person. It’s really important to stick to who you are. If you are going to suddenly be sick of games and entertaining in 2 months, then don’t bother trying this route. It needs to fit your personality. For example, one entertainer I can watch no matter what game he is playing would be SodaPoppin on WoW. SodaPoppin happens to also be really good at PvP on WoW, but he holds thousands of followers while playing the most random games on the internet. There are other examples of these gamers, and they are most likely the ones that have the luxury of swapping games when new titles come out. These are streamers that build up a community behind them and the community stays and watches because they love their personality. This is what you would want to accomplish.
Some things to think about:
- Are you going to hold on-stream games?
- Are you going to switch from game to game? (not suggested to start)
- Can you entertain on a consistent basis or do you sometimes get silent and boring?
- Are you friendly and engaging?
Some things you should be doing:
- Greet your viewers more then a High Level Gamer would (not annoyingly, but still welcoming)
- Show viewers, new and old, that they are welcome
- Continue being engaged throughout the entire stream time
- Come up with events and games you will be able to bring to the stream
- Hold funny giveaways and think of events ahead of time
Side Note
It’s completely okay if you want to combine the two type of streamers into one. If that’s who you are, then go for it! The only thing I would suggest is sticking to yourself. People are there because they want to see you, so if you’re suddenly switching the role and portrayal of your stream, you may lose followers. The same goes for the game you’re playing. Try to build a community behind yourself and make sure they’re there to see you before you go and stream random other games. Switching games is a luxury some streamers don’t have.
