I think this is a topic that every gamer wants to know. I’m actually surprised this is the first time we’re covering it, but I guess it’s better late than never right!? There are some basics that I will run through and talk about being that I have to break them up to explain per game situations; and then I will get into some fun things that will really help you.
The Basics:
-If you are trying to get sponsored as a team the bare minimums a company will want is for you to have a GameBattles and YouTube account. (This generally goes for single player games on MLG as well: such as HearthStone or StarCraft)
-Sticking to the same topic, if your trying to get a clan sponsorship, odds are you want a domain to show you are the real deal. Try to keep these domains to strictly “.com’s”.
-When you are applying for sponsorship’s, do yourself a favor and don’t lie about your success. This goes for any game. Whether they can find your stats for League of Legends, or any statistics on GameBattles, if the sponsor is worthy enough of giving you something, they aren’t stupid enough to not check your stats.
Single Player Games Basic Rules Continued:
-Usually a YouTube channel is a bare minimum unless you are trying to get sponsored from your Twitch account. Twitch is growing and growing daily so generally regardless of which it is, you will need a decent following before you get yourself noticed.
-There is another cardinal rule when it comes to single player sponsorship’s; you either need to have a killer personality, or be REALLY good at something that gets you noticed. When your applying for sponsorship’s, they will look for one of these two traits.
Players and teams are constantly looking for sponsorship’s. Who could blame them? Wouldn’t you take free stuff for playing video games if you were offered it? I know I would. You have to make sure you stand out. This is like applying for college, they get an obscene amount of applications, emails, and spam every second of the day. What makes you any better than the rest? You should ask yourself that, because if you can’t think of anything, you might need to work on finding something!
Cardinal Rules when Applying for a Sponsorship:
Make a professional and great proposal:
Like I said, there are tons of people applying and sending in requests for these things, you need to stand out. Just like applying to college or an upscale job, the shit*y applications go straight to the trash. If you can’t take the time to proofread your application and make sure it’s professional, chances are the person reading doesn’t need to take the time to look it over. If you have to look up proper formatting for proposals I suggest doing so, this isn’t just some simple ol’ email you send everyday to your grandmother from Nebraska to remind her your birthday is just around the corner.
Don’t start applying/emailing to early:
This is the worst thing you can do. You don’t want to jump the gun on getting yourself out there. What is the worst thing that could happen if you wait to long? The sponsors come to you? Man, that would be a tragedy! Let’s use RedBull as the sponsor in this case. If you send an email, and write on their twitter, and shoot them an application, and you get that 1/100 chance of them actually checking you out and your NOT ready; well now you just lost your shot. There is a strong chance they’re not looking at you again when you finally are ready and your application comes their way again. Don’t jump the gun, because you’ll REALLY have to go above and beyond if you have to try to get their attention a second time.
